BS 3 stands for Bharat Stage 3, which is the third emission standard set by the Indian government to regulate the amount of pollutants produced by internal combustion engines used in vehicles. It was implemented in 2010 and required vehicles to meet stricter emissions norms for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
The BS 3 standard was replaced by BS 4 in 2017, which further reduced the permissible limits for emissions. This change resulted in an increase in the prices of vehicles due to the need for advanced technology and modifications to meet the new standards.
The Indian government is currently working on the implementation of BS 6, which will be the latest and most stringent emission standard applicable to vehicles. It is set to come into effect from April 2020.
